Knicks Knacks

The unauthorized Knicks blog from Journal News beat writer Mike Dougherty

Looking back. Looking ahead.

March
23

Weren’t these supposed to be meaningful games?

Please don’t mention this within earshot of James Dolan, but the Knicks have dropped four of five since the anxious owner gave Isiah Thomas a contract extension.

I can’t possibly believe a team that loses to New Orleans and Portland at home in a week’s time is a playoff contender.

Maybe it’s time for a new game plan. Curry needs more perimeter support. He also needs to quit standing around waiting for the double team.

“People are really focused on him, Stephon Marbury said. “It’s hard because of the way how they are playing him.

The suggestion?

Marbury wants to run some misdirection plays for Curry, and he believes the occasional pick-and-roll would also help open things up.

What the Knicks really need is a healthy Quentin Richardson.

Anyway, let’s take a look at the remaining schedule:

March 23 at Cleveland
March 26 vs. Orlando
March 28 vs. Cleveland
March 30 at Dallas
March 31 at New Orleans
April 4 vs. Philadelphia
April 6 vs. Minnesota
March 7 at Milwaukee
March 9 vs. Detroit
March 10 at Chicago
March 13 at New Jersey
March 15 at Toronto
March 16 vs. New Jersey
March 18 at Charlotte

I realize it’s pretty much impossible to guess how the Knicks are going to play night to night, but how many wins do you see on that list? Be objective. How many wins do you believe will lock down eighth place?

We need 8 more wins for the playoffs I think.

Right now, it looks like 7 wins…

I think we’ll have to tie the Magic in order to make the playoffs.

8 wins with a 38-44 record could possibly get it done for the 8th seed. Knicks can easily end up finishing with a 36-46 record and out of the playoffs.

Honestly I don’t know with this team. Its impossible to go down a schedule and check a win or a loss, as yesterday just proved.

The losses they have to sub-standard teams are a lack of focus and being prepared. Now, I don’t know how that’s possible since EVERY game counts from now on if they want to reach the playoffs. Don’t they get it? Don’t they know that IF they miss the post season, then everyone will get on them for losing motivation since Isiah got an extension.

Knicks will NEVER have healthy Q. Chronic back problems.

Knicks NEED a healthy Jamal Crawford by the last week or two of the season.

Knicks NEED NOT jack up 27 threes…funny, everyone thought Jamal and Q take too many long distance shots. Since they’ve been gone, we have nearly doubled our attempts. Threes are fools gold…just like this playoff push.

I quote Greg Anthony, “Championships are won in the paint.” He is also a wise man to throw Crawford’s name out there are a runner-up for MVP of the Atlantic Div. along with J-Kidd. See espn.com. Bosh won it deservingly. That’s cause Jamal can multi-task with scoring and passing in the flow of the game. He WINS games for us too.

Plus Jamal plays REAL well vs the Cavs…check out his #’s the past three seasons.

Since 2004: WE ARE 6-2 WITH JAMAL VS CLEVELAND

    22.8 PPG
    47.% FG
    5.6 APG
    3.9 RPG
    1.6 SPG

Mikey D…Q-Rich would help but we have to move past him. He will always be a perennial “day to day” player with that back.

OH yeah and that game winner over Larry Hughes last year.

Yeah, my guess would be seven wins too, and I feel like I might be generous. Sometimes the Knicks look amazing, but other times they look like, well, a team that is a bunch of games under .500.

As for Dolan, he deserves all the grief he gets. Why would he give an extension anyway? What has Isiah done as GM and coach to make him worthy of more time here?

As for Marbury, it’s nice to hear his input, but shouldn’t the coach be figuring this out?

    Mike:

    First time long time.

What have you heard about the Randolph Morris signing? When will he be eligible to suit up?

  8. DaVonn Jefferson

that kid Isiah just signed from Kentucky is really really good.

They looked dispirited last night. I see them getting on a losing streak more readily than a winning one. They may finish way out of it. Too many injuries. I hope I’m wrong. Who is this kid from kentucky? I checked ESPN transactions and saw nothing.
