Passing the down time

You can probably tell, I’m a little bored. I cover more golf these days than basketball. Check “this”:http://www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=VIDEO03 out. Click on a golf tip. It’s an internet version of what I’m doing on my summer vacation.
Anyway, since there’s not much else to do before the lottery, let’s mess with the Nets.
Does this need to be a busy summer for Rod Thorn? He could just extend Vince Carter and join me over at Wykagyl Country Club. The aging roster will probably contend for a couple of seasons.
Jason Kidd might be slowing down, but he will always make teammates better. Carter only needs a second wind. Richard Jefferson will improve with a clearer role. Nenad Krstic is a useful big man who could make a big difference on the blocks.
So what do the Nets really need?
A power forward with a little offense would help a great deal. Perhaps a spot-up shooter off the bench would be helpful.
That’s about it.
Of course, this might be the best opportunity for Thorn to start rebuilding for the move to Brooklyn. He could urge Carter to move on. He could get some valuable pieces from a contending team longing for the guidance of Kidd.
It’s something he’ll no doubt consider.
What do you think the Nets will do? I know the Knicks would rather not deal with this group after getting run over for the last five seasons.

The Nets need to think about the age and health of both Kidd and Carter. Kidd’s value is only going to decline and Carter is going to ask for a ton of money. Thus, the Nets would be smart to see if they could get young players and draft picks for these guys and start planning for the future. They won’t win any championships with the current crew anyway, as they’ve proven over the past five years.
I agree 100% with you David.
I think the Nets should make the trade with the Lakers involving Jason Kidd for Farmer, Bynum and something else. Then I would do a sign and trade for Vince to get some other pieces, more than likely a shooting guard or a power forward. I know the Nets have that kid Williams at PG but I would still get Farmer.
Everything should be about the move to Brooklyn now. They have 2 seasons (I think it’s 2 seasons) to get the team together before they actually make the move.
Mike, I don’t like talking about the Nets on a blog LOL.
I’m really interested in seeing what we do this off season.
I heard that the O’neal trade rumors are about to start swirling something serious in the next week or 2. I also heard that David Lee is going to be the first one mentioned. I pray we don’t give up Lee.
WHY WOULD ISIAH DO THAT????
Carter needs a second wind? This guy is a joke! he dominates the ball in the last 2 minutes of a game, when he has a GREAT PG that could make the correct decision. Where was VC game 6? where was he at any away game during the playoffs. This guy has amazing talent but he’d rather shoot 22 footers with one leg flying in the air and no one defending him. Nets should build this team around Kidd , RJ, Kristic. If you notice the Nets went downhill once VC came on board. Fun to watch but no substance
They need to rebuild. However, I hope they don’t because I hate the Nets.
Vince Carter is not a winning basketball player despite being the 2nd most talented player in the league.
Jason Kidd only has a few years left.
DaVonn,
We’ll do more Knicks in the coming weeks, I promise, there’s just not much going on right now. As for David Lee, he’s the one player teams will ask for because he’s a young player with upside. And should the Knicks somehow land somebody like O’Neal or Garnett, he is the odd man out playing just 15-20 minutes a game.
I don’t know who Isiah might offer should he go shopping, but he’s not going to part with Lee unless he’s getting a bonafide All-Star. Dolan won’t let him.
The nets need to negotiate with their stars with bloated contracts and do a Miami… basically convince them to take lesser money for the good of the team. That’s the only way they can get enough pieces to compete. They do not have to bench depth to go all the way. They basically played to their maximum potential by getting to the 2nd round.
Unless they want to keep getting knocked out at the 2nd round, they need to rebuild by renegotiating player contracts and signing FA, or just trading them and get some good based year compensation players out of the draft. I believe the Nets have a pretty good draft history.
I don’t know what they will do but I can tell you what I think they should do. They wont’ be good enough to beat Detroit, Chicago and possibly Cleveland again in a 7 game series. This also means they deffinately won’t be beating San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, Utah, Pheonix and even Golden State! So what’s the point of having a few 2nd round exits over the next 2 years?
They need to tear it down and get as much value out of Kidd and a sign and trade with Carter that they can get. Trade for a bunch of picks, young talent and expiring contracts to get ready for Brooklyn. They could be very good again in 2-3 years if they do it right.
Will they do that though? No, because they still need to sell tickets in Jersey (they don’t sell as it is) and don’t have the balls to take some losses over the next year.
I doubt they can get equal value for Kidd. Any team looking to add him is thinking championship and quick – Kidd’s knee and age demand it. Teams like that don’t usually have a lot of spare parts that they can send over, and young teams looking to get better probably aren’t expecting to get to a championship round under Kidd’s shelf life. I think Carter is a better bet to net some useful players – he can be a team’s Stackhouse for quite a few years. As Kennymo rightly points out, Carter is a guy who wants superstar shots and money, but does not deliver. Put him on a squad where he can be a part (clearly, he can’t carry a team as these playoffs showed; getting guarded in the post by Eric Snow and turning the ball over is all anybody needs to see) and I think everybody’s happy. So my suggestion is Carter in a sign and trade for a couple of problems – Artest and Brad Miller. Nets get to try out Artest and not be on the hook past his current contract, and Sacremento, who are not liking the length of Brad Miller’s deal, get rid of him too. The Nets could use his size and savvy, and with Moore, they have a nice combo, plus insurance on Krstic who can play the 4 or 5. These three in rotation hold down the paint nicely, Jefferson does his slashing thing and Artest plays pick and roll, posts up and shuts down LeBron and anybody else with a notion. Keep Kidd, let him tutor Williams, and make him the next Avery Johnson. When his contract is up, you have some flexibility and you continue building young wing players in around solid bigs in Moore, Miller, Krstic, and Boone.
My Question is: Who do the knicks draft? Most mocks show 1-15 filled with bigs, meaning we should have a decent shooter to grab at 23. Who is he?
A shot blocking monster.
I hope we get sean williams. We can train our role players how to shoot the mid range jumper. As for 3’s… Nate Robinson, Crawford, and Marbury can all shoot it, they just need to get better spacing and better looks.
Also, much harder to get a good shot blocker than a good shooter. Bigger players typically demand more money, but someone like a Kapono can be had for the mid-level exception. Also, an anchor on defense allows mediocre long range shooters to excel… by covering up the mistakes these long range shooters typically have on defense.
