Knicks Knacks

An intelligent conversation

My job would be infinitely easier if only Malik Rose played 20 minutes every single game.

He is always the voice of reason in a Knicks locker room that often gets caught up in hyperbole. All of the players are accessible in season. Most of them are quotable. Rose just has a natural ability to fill up a notebook.

The only problem is, even a respected veteran like Rose struggles to maintain credibility when they watch from the bench.

A number of the beat writers had a chance to do a phone interview with him today as the NPBA worked to get the word out about its partnership with the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Rose is among the 12 players on hand this week for double sessions in the classroom. The seminar covers everything from making smart investments to evaluating business proposals. It goes well beyond the basics to the point. The participants even developed a plan for growing the International Fight League.

“The way these business minds work and put these things together, there are a lot of ways they can deceive you,” he said. “Now we’re better equipped, seeing the tricks of the trade.”

Rose has long been preparing for the future.

He’s also been quite busy in San Antonio and Philadelphia, working out and fine tuning. The hustling power forward wants to spend more time on the court. It’s not going to be easy for anyone to get noticed behind the likes of Zach Randolph, Eddy Curry and David Lee.

“I can fill any role the Knicks want me to fill,” Rose said. “But I would rather not be just the locker room voice. I’m just 32, that’s not ancient. When I was in San Antonio, the guy who filled that role was Kevin Willis. Oddly enough, he still played. Kevin got eight to 10 minutes a night, and that’s more than I’m getting in New York. I would love to be the voice of reason and voice of experience in the locker room, but there’s a lot I can offer on the court, and that’s one of my objectives, to get back on the court.”

He also talked a little about Randolph and Curry, and believes they’ll be able to happily co-exist in the right system.

And the renewed optimism was addressed, too.

“I sure hope and pray it’s a better year,” Rose said. “We’ve been good on paper for two years, since I’ve gotten here, and we haven’t found a way to translate that into a significant amount of wins. I know I’m preparing myself to give what’s expected of me. I know the Garden is expecting big things, front office and fans, so when my number gets called, I’ll be ready to produce the same way I did in the last month of the season.”

Quick, somebody name that guy a captain.

Malik here is all you need to do:

#1 – Continue the hard nosed Defense

#2 – Know your limits – Stop trying the Olajuwon drop step spin move. You are not Hakeem. If you could just harness your abilities a little and play within yourself you would get more minutes GARUNTEED. The reason i want to break furnature half the time your in the game is because you constantly try to do things on the court you are not capable of. Stick to what you do. Play D, Set Screens and hit the 10-15 footer IF ITS OPEN.

#3 – Get that J right. You need to nail the J if its open… but DONT FORCE IT.. only if its open.

fallow these 3 steps Malik and i garuntee you will see more than 10mpg a night.

    The end

  2. Jersey J

    Elite,

    Please learn how to spell!!!

  3. Mr. Black

    Elite,

    #1- Purchase a dictionary.

#2- Please use the dictionary for something other than a paperweight.

#3- If all else fails, type your (please note this is the proper use of the word “your”. “Your” indicates possession. I noticed you use “your” in place of “You’re”. E.g., “Take the jump shot when YOU’RE open.” Not, “Take the jumpshot when YOUR open.”) response in WordPerfect, then use spell check, then paste the correct response on the website.

FOLLOW the aforementioned three steps Elite, and I GUARANTEE people will stop laughing at your responses.

P.S. There is no reason to type “The end” at the end of a response. Once people see the grammar and spelling errors end, they will know that you are through typing.

Wow … stop picking on my guy elite. I don’t know if there’s any way to withstand the pressure of putting up perfect posts if Statler and Waldorf are going to scrutinize grammar and spelling.

  5. Elite

    LOL only on the internet.

So i cant spell, big deal. Dont care. :)

  6. Mr. Black

Can I be Waldorf? I never really liked Statler.

Elite, I was just kidding with you. Please don’t be upset. We would’nt want you breaking your “furnature”.

  7. Mr. Black

Statler: “You ever think there might be life after death?”

Waldorf: “Yes, every time I leave this theater.”
    ———————————————————————
Statler: “You old fool. You slept through the show.”

Waldorf: “I’m the fool? You watched it!”

  8. win

Wow! Great stuff Elite and everyone.
Mike do you get a chance to go to the practice facility? Earlier N8 had an article on the Knick web site and he said he was spending the summer in the gym in NY. WHo else is up there and how are these guys looking. Also what is your real feeling for the upcomming season.

  9. knickchecker

    I LOVE the Muppet Show.

Statler: “Mike Dougherty’s blog is looking better these days.”

    Waldorf: “Has his writing improved?”

Statler: “No, my vision has gotten worse.”

Waldorf and Statler: “Haaaa ha ha ha ha ha”
    ————————————————————————————-
We should get Waldorf and Statler Knick season tickets.

Statler: “Boy that Jerome James spares no expense when it comes to conditioning.”

Waldorf: “So he cares about physical fitness?”

Statler: “No, he just put central air in his home.”

Waldorf and Statler: “Haaaa ha ha ha.”

Please cut Malik if there are no plans to play him. He’s class and effort, two qualities in short supply in professional sport. He’s also a solid player who would lead the Knicks in rebounds 25 nights a season and gladly use all six if called upon.

The NBA needs a guy like that on the floor somewhere.

  11. Mike Dougherty

Quit it, I can’t stop laughing.

And no win, there’s no access to the MSG practice facility unless there’s a practice, shoot-around or some kind of pre-draft workout. There’s a gated player entrance, so we can’t even tell whose cars are in the parking lot. When I last checked, several players had stopped by, including Nate. David Lee has apparently logged more hours than anyone.

I asked Malik if there were any plans to reconvene early. He said none that he knew of. He is in the midst of a workout program that will take him through September, but Malik said he would come in early if the request is made.

  12. Mr. Black

Knickchecker you are one funny Knick fan.

Man, that would be so funny to have W&S in the stands. Jermome James’ conditioning. I am going to laugh at that all day.

  13. fredweis

I’ve always been a big Malik fan.

When he’s gotten minutes the last two years he’s actually put impressive numbers per 48 (a string of double doubles in late 05-06). Unfortunately Isiah under-utiziles him.

With the supbar defense of Eddy, Zach and Lee, playing Malik – to me – is a no brainer. This is a player with genuine championship experience against some of the best bigmen of all-time (Malone, Olajuwon, Shaq, Webber).

Anyone who can’t see that Malik is a huge asset to the Knicks is basketball blind.

  14. Henry

Oh please, he’s a bum, I don’t care how many chairs this short, no offense skills, over rated power forward pulls out. He sucks. He’s what 30 something and you want him to take minutes from who? Lee and Balkman are going to get the bulk of the minutes coming of the bench and if you ask me then Jefferies even though he had a bad first year. I hope he starts bitching so Isiah has to trade him. I’d take Jackie Butler back from San Antonio if they want Malik. I’m tired of hearing how great a guy he is. I want to win and Malik time has past if he ever had one.

Does Sacramento need a great guy, because I’d take their problem child for him.

  15. whoa

Rose may be a fine man, but he sucks on the court.

He shouldn’t even be on the roster, let alone get any PT.

    He’s stealing money.

  16. KFFL

Malik Rose is a great role-model. He goes from a winning a championship, one year, to a lottery team the next. I don’t mind having him in my locker room. He can make sure Zach and Nate don’t get in trouble. Besides he’s going to be excellent trade bait next year. Unfortunatly David Lee needs all the playing time he can get, so Malik us looking at 8 mpg tops next year.
