Marbury on Marbury

October
1

At the risk of piling on, the most intriguing player at Media Day was the one and only Stephon Marbury.

He was actually more open that I anticipated, so give him a little credit.

The questions weren’t very specific because there’s no point in making somebody feel ridiculously uncomfortable. I just played back the audio, hoping to gain a better understanding of the various points the veteran playmaker was attempting to make in eight minutes of conversation.

Maybe none of us will ever completely understand where this is going.

I got this much from the visit, Marbury is working hard to separate the player from the person. And in case you can’t read in between the lines, he spelled it all out when somebody asked Marbury to describe the highlight of his summer.

“What was the highlight of my summer?” he said. “When I gave myself to Jesus Christ.”

Marbury even noted the sudden transformation occurred June 29.

And what inspired the change of heart?

“What happened to me was I got to see myself outside of myself,” he said. “I was able to look in the mirror and really see myself.”

Don’t ask what he saw.

“I mean, that’s personal,” Marbury said. “I’m not going to ask you what your wife wears when she’s getting dressed or what your son (does) inside (his) bedroom getting ready for school. That’s my personal business. I don’t feel like anybody should be able to ask a question like that. I think that’s disrespectful to ask me a question like that. I don’t think you should get out of line by asking me a question like that. That’s personal.”

What’s the point of all of this?

Marbury is not going to change. Regardless of what people think about the situation, this is apparently who he is now. Marbury contends none of it matters in between the lines.

“Basketball in my life, it has nothing to do with what’s going on with me as a person,” he said. “The way how I play basketball is how I will play basketball. Me as a person, that’s who I am as a person.”

Marbury did again say he was thinking about relocating to Italy when his contract expires in two seasons. And he doesn’t seem to mind that such a move puts a limited window on a chance to win a ring.

“I’m not caught up in winning no ring,” Marbury said. “I want to win a championship just as a basketball player, for something that I do. Basketball is not my life. Like, if I win a championship, great. If I don’t, life is going to continue to go on. Basketball is only a short portion of your life. After basketball you’ve got to live the next 50, 60 years.”

Is there any truth to the rumor that Jesus Christ wants to give him back?

  2. Lefty

    islefan,

Yes but they can’t make it work under the salary cap.

  3. Brandon

Mike it’s been 4 months WELCOME BACK, but my PG sounds high :(

  4. Rafa

    Hey MIke,

Pleae. We wanna know about the other players.

  5. Chris

I think not making the playoffs the last 3 seasons and all the losing has really gotten to Marbury. As happy as he seems, he’s probably trying to cover up how beaten up he is inside.

I just want to see him healthy this year and playing the best ball he can play. I want to see him being a defender like he was last year and hopefully the aggressive player he became after he finally adjusted to what he was asked to do and how the team was being run by Isiah.

All this other stuff is just window dressing. No ones gonna care how quirky he is, if we win this year. JUST PLAY BALL!

  7. Alex

Jesus would only take him if he included David Lee and two first round unprotected picks.

    blah, blah, blah.
insert demeaning, insulting, condescending remark about the knicks’ salary cap and lack of playoff opinion here and hope that it comes across as original and witty instead of boring and commonplace conformist

    hope.

i know all you honkeys that want david lee on your stupid fantasy teams would love nothing more than to have him play for your chicago bulls or phoenix suns. bottom line is the knicks picked him when NOBODY else in the league would so shut you pie hole because D Lee is going nowhere you scub video game suburban eediots.

I think it’s awesome that Stephon is now walking with Christ. I don’t know him personally but I can say without a doubt, that is the greatest thing he has ever accomplished and ever will in this life. God Bless you Stephon! Welcome to the family!

I’m gonna post this one again on this thread where it’s more apropos.

Stephon is a great athlete. No one will deny that, however, everyone knows he’s not the sharpest crayon in the box. I’ll be rooting like crazy for the guy and would love to see him succeed, he’s NY and so am I, but give me a break. He has made many questionable comments and many questionable decisions on and probably off, the floor.

I just hope his decision making on the court rises to the level of a Kidd or a Lebron (good luck). As to off the court, I really don’t care.

    What weak ass stuff.

I have one question for Starbury:

    Does he have a prenup?

Because Im pretty sure the Mrs has talked to her lawyer.
