A little psycho babble

February
25

Since the Knicks are fast becoming head cases, I’m starting to believe a complete teardown will be necessary over the summer if they don’t rattle off a bunch of wins to close the season.

There won’t be anything left to believe in.

After last season, the Knicks went home thinking untimely injuries to Jamal Crawford, David Lee and Stephon Marbury derailed a playoff run. It doesn’t matter how realistic they were being, NBA players work harder in the summer when they are convinced a team is on the verge.

What have they got to go on this summer?

I mean, other than hope they might eventually be dealt to a team that is contending for a playoff spot.

I think it may be time to trade Crawford in the off season who’s value has never been higher.

  2. George

I don’t care about this offseason unless Isiah Thomas is fired. I don’t care about the team unless he’s fired. everything hinges on his firing. If Isiah is fired, I would advocate trades. If he isn’t, then I wouldn’t. But I also would give up completely if he does return.

I wish I agreed with George but I gotta believe, the only way this team turns around is if Dolan turns around (and leaves). Dolan’s got to change or, at best, we’ll get a good GM and Dolan will end up running him out of town. This is a really ugly situation. Unless it’s changed at the very top or the very top changes, the rest of the body will continue stumbling down the same dead end. I wonder if Dolan ever thinks about that classic AA saying: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different results is a definition of insanity. Mr. Dolan, please take your hands off the controls and step away from the franchise!

    Mike,
What do you think about this semi-rebuilding plan?
    Buy out Marbury and James
Trade Curry for expiring contracts and a draft pick
Trade Lee for Marcus Williams and a draft pick
    Build around Crawford and Zack
You have 4 options at the 3, find one that will work
Find a defensive center with the draft picks or trade

Yea, I agree with Not Hawthorne Wingo. Why would Colangelo or anyone want to work for a control freak? You can see Isiah would like to say what’s really on his mind (if he had one) but the PR guy is standing right next to him. Picture Colangelo putting up with that. The only one that could save us is David Sterns. He’d have to get Dolan to sell the team. Other than that, we’ll have a tough time getting someone to right this ship.

Why would a few wins in this meaningless season prevent a complete teardown?

  7. Sergio

    Adam,

Build around Crawford and Randolph? Are you serious??

  8. Adam

    Sergio

What’s the alternative to getting rid of everyone?

  9. Trin

Believe it or not but Randolph, Curry and JC all have trade value…
Accept expiring contracts and picks for them.
Let Marbury’s and Malik’s contract expire
    Fire Isiah. Hire Colengalo
    Start over fresh.
We will have cap space plus a definite lottery pick as well as some other high draft picks that were received from the trades mentioned above.

Those of you that read my gues blog on this site know that it is hard to get me overly pessimistic. Still, I am closer to those waters than ever before.

But, I do not think a complete and total breakdown is necessrily the answer. Individually, as we all know, there is talent here. You gotta pick at least some pieces to hold on to, and let the shake up rattle the rest. There is no point to a blowup just for symbolic purposes. And I do agree a change of one person at the top will be more effective than shipping out tons of people that actually play. Meaning, getting rid of Isiah can do more to help this team than shipping out the entire stating 5.

For argument’s sake, I still say we keep Eddy over Zach. Its not even a question to me. Zach’s negatives faaaar outweigh Curry’s negatives. You can find a way to mitigate a center that can’t block shots and is poor defensively. Get him the right guy to play next to. There is no way to cover up a chucker who has no sense for team game. We all saw what Eddy can do last year. Sure, he is too fragile for a professional athelete, but there is still plenty to work with. Eddy at his best is more valuable to a successful team than Zach at his best. period.

If Dolan is not made by his father to back off the controlling of what is said and done by his GM and coach he will never pull in any talent with a brain. He will get yes men and that does NOTHING for you in corporate America. We would all love to be told we are brilliant but if it is not true, it does harm not good.

Dolan, back off. Fire Thomas. Hire talent, sit back and enjoy the ride.

I’ve been watching some college games, boys, and this is what I see.

Michael Beasley was outstanding rebounding the basketball against one of the best teams in the country. He didn’t make many outside shots but scored 30+ anyway. He made 10-11 from the line. He made one really nice dish for a tying three. Texas was able to take him away and his teammates were not able to make them pay. I would not cry if we lost every game for the rest of the season to get this kid.

DJ Augustine had a great game. The color commentator called him the Mariano Rivera of college basketball for his ability to control a game down the stretch. Texas might be able to beat the Knicks. This guy is as efficient as it gets. He has a great handle, he has range to keep defenses honest, and he’s smart. He’d look great in a Knick uniform.

Derrick Rose was as advertised for Memphis against Tenessee. He had some nice runners off the glass ala Marbury. He’s a great athlete but you wonder if the Knicks need another shoot first PG. He missed some important free throws. Memphis will not win a national title with their free throw shooting. Dorsey and Douglas-Roberts were unremarkable, in this particular game.

I think UCONN could beat the Knicks too, though, Hasheem Thabeet seems too raw for the pros right now. I’m a sucker for guys who can, you know, shoot and dribble. I need to see more before I can write about their players though. I think Indiana is playing tonight and I’m really looking forward to seeing Eric Gordon.

  13. Sergio

    Adam,

There is no other alternative. When you have cancer, you need to get rid of everything. You leave nothing behind. Same thing with this team. All 15 of these losers need to go.

  14. dan

    Sergio,
I don’t know about that. I mean, every time Nate went hard to the bucket on Sunday night good things happened, but he only did it four or five times. This club just doesn’t seem to get in a rhythm and stay with what works. There’s consistent poor decision making, but, there is talent.

I think we need a new coach and GM, a new player who will be our best or one of our best players, and maybe one or two other deals to get redundancy out of our roster.

  15. WC

The idea that the Knicks have a lot of individual talent is total nonsense. Our players suck. That’s why our record sucks. We have 15 very limited one dimensional role players.

The only players the Knicks should keep are Lee, Balkman, Morris, and Chandler. Every single other player has demonstated conclusively that he is either one dimensional, very limited in some very important way, or a negative for team chemistry.

You could even make the case that Lee and Balkman have no outside game at all and will never be solid starters (let alone all stars). However, at least they are young enough to have some chance to develop and they bring enough to the table in some other ways to be valuable role players.

We’ve seen so little of Morris and Chandler, it’s hard to know yet whether they are limited role players or not. However, I suspect that if they were showing anything in practice, they would be getting at least some time.

The only way to fix this team is to acknowledge how bad it is and blow it up!

Players like Curry, Crawford, etc.. suck!

Sure you can get away with a player like Curry on your team if you have a great defensive power forward to cover up for him, but he still sucks terribly defensively, has no heart at all, doesn’t even like the game etc..

Crawford is probably the most over rated player in the NBA right now because of his PPG. His shooting percentage is a disaster. His shot selection is a disaster. His defense is a disaster. Anyone can score 20 PPG if they chuck all night and get hot here or there (which only means hitting 50% for a terrible shooter like Crawford). At best, Crawford is a 6th man that should come off the bench as a spark plug and get benched immediately if he misses his first few shots.

This team is a disaster and needs to be blown up top to bottom.

  16. Luke

Yeah WC because Balkman ,lee,Morris, and Chandler are triple double waiting to happen.

You sure do know how the game is played Im watching league pass right now and I see plenty of teams insert players and immediately remove them if they miss shots because after all no one in the nba misses shots lol
