Making plans for shoot-around

April
29

I can’t wait for the NBA to release the new schedule.

The official press release from Charlotte has just confirmed Larry Brown is taking over as head coach of the Bobcats, which creates a return date worth circling on the calendar. He’s still not at liberty to go into great detail about what happened in New York because of the settlement he signed, but the wandering hall-of-famer is a master of thinly-veiled comments.

What are the fans going to do when he’s introduced at MSG?

It’s hard not to wonder if the Knicks would be a better franchise had Isiah Thomas been more accomodating. The roster purge would’ve started two years earlier, if nothing else.

Meanwhile, it seems Donnie Walsh is still doing homework.

If there is a possibility of Tom Thibodeau interviewing during a break in the postseason action, the Celtics aren’t doing him any favors by letting Atlanta hang around. The series will go until at least Friday now, and there’s not likely to be any significant time off between rounds even if Boston wins out.

And it might be smart to slow down where Sam Mitchell is concerned. The powers that be in Toronto must first decide whether they are comfortable eating up to $9 million. It’s not likely to be an easy decision. The fiscally prudent Raptors have already begun wondering how they will be able to afford T.J. Ford and Jose Calderone, so they aren’t likely to simply throw money away.

It’s interesting to listen to a lot of these possible candidates behind the mic doing commentary at the games. Rick Carlisle, tends to repeat himself a good bit. Mark Jackson has a lot of personality and seems really suited to commentary. The guy with the true depth of knowledge seems to be Jeff Van Gundy. I’d love to see him back but he needs a fire in the belly that he doesn’t have.

The Knicks can not sign someone who had no coaching ability in their life time. Mark Jackson might be a good guy but he should take an assistant job first and learn the ropes. I know everyone hates college coaches because of their terrible track record in the NBA. But if you can get a young fiery college coach whose built a program from scratch, Jay Wright from Villanove perhaps. They already have a great sense about drafting college players from playing against them all the time and at worst you would at least be pointing the knicks in the right direction. Anything is better than Isiah Thomas.

Look, 1/2 of this mess is Brown’s fault as well. He runs roughshod over teams. He got his way on Francis and a couple other roster moves. When those went bad, he tried to go wholesale. Nobody was buying because he didnt do anything with the talent that was here. Point is… there was and is talent. Larry Brown and Isiah couldnt get it out of them… so it aint just the coach. SWAP THE PIECES or we’ll end up in the same spot.
