Any votes for Johnson?

April
30

There aren’t many proven winners on the interview circuit at the moment, so I’m guessing Avery Johnson will be able to pick his next destination.

Could he land in New York?

The possibility exists, but it’s likely Johnson will first decide where he’s got the best chance to succeed long term. Right now, the Bulls might be in a better situation with a nucleus of talented players in need of direction.

He is the kind of defense-and-rebounding head coach a lot of you have been clamoring for.

What do you think?

The Knicks should scoop up Avery Johnson. He is good, stern, yells and even finds faults when they win.

  2. George

I like Avery a lot. He’s the right coach for this team. Hire him!

  3. MJ

Sign me up. I’m all in for Avery Johnson. Will fit like a glove for this team and the NY media. Walsh needs to get him on the interview schedule today. Cuban is a fool to let him go. He needs to deal with whoever did that stupid Kidd trade with the Nets.

  4. Sergio

I’d take Avery Johnson over Mark Jackson but that’s not saying much. I still prefer Tom Thibodeau. The fact that AJ was part of two of the biggest upsets in NBA history (Miami ‘06, Golden State ‘07) really turns me off.

  5. InJournalismClass

sergio, better the two biggest upsets than the biggest laughing stock in NBA History. But Thibodeau is a good coach. I’d prefer those two over Jackson. Maybe Jackson can be an assistant along with Ewing and Houston to bring some of that old Knick luster back.

Johnson inherited an offensive team who could not even spell defense. If he can build a defensive minded team from scratch in new york the knicks will be fine.

  7. RP

I vote for AJ as the next coach but you are right he will look at the bulls opening and roster and make a decision :). At least he tried to preach defense after Nelson left dallas…

Avery is the RIGHT MAN for the job!! Walsh needs to make AJ the top priority. Love his competitiveness and attitude!! It would be GREAT if the Knicks could land him….

  9. whoa

Not interested. The NY media would eat him for breakfast.

AJ, sure, I’d roll with that but, of the names being bandied about, I’m with Sergio. I think Thib is going to be the next JVG, former assistant who, as a coach, outworks everyone else and insists on the fundamentals.

I like him a lot. WE need him. Out of all the people out there I’d rather have him then Carlile then Tom

    #1 choice = thib

    #2 = avery

  13. DeNiro

    no to avery!!!!

Sergio – first of all Dallas was ROBBED against Miami. I’ve rarely seen such one sided officiating. If that series was called fairly, Dallas wins that title.

However, Dallas and Johnson were exposed to some degree by Nelson and Golden State.

That said, I’d take Avery over Mark Jackson.

  15. Sergio

I know the media will not get on Donnie Walsh for hiring Mark Jackson but looking at it objectively, it’s such a horrible move. How are you going to hire someone so inexperienced like Jackson when so many experienced and qualified coaches are available? I still do not see what Walsh sees in Jackson. The Knicks need a real basketball coach. Not a former player who you are hoping works out.

” I think Thib is going to be the next JVG, former assistant who, as a coach, outworks everyone else and insists on the fundamentals.”

    I’m with that, NotHawthorneWingo.

The Dallas team was built by and then beaten by Don Nelson. Avery took over a team that was already good and was not able to strategize a way to get them a championship.

D’Antoni, similarly, was great at running all over inferior teams in the regular season, but lacked the ability to finish the job.

Both of these guys had superior talent and, though, I don’t blame anyone for not winning the post season tournament, what has either really accomplished? The NY job is going to be a REALLY HARD JOB! Look what it did to Larry Brown.

I would like either of them over Mark Jackson, however, who has done not much more than rip the Knicks as a YES broadcaster.

I’m just happy Isiah is gone (at least sort of). He’s a guy who’ll make a bad situation worse. Any of these other people are an improvement and I’ll be happy. Hopefully, we’ll get a good player in the draft and pull off a move or two to bring some cap relief and some players who’ll hustle. Then, we need a young and hard working coach, who’s in it for the long haul.

  17. Alex

    Dan, i disagree…

Avery took a 50 win dallas team and made them into a 67 win dallas team. They already had a good offense. once he instilled defense, it was whole other story. Dallas’ problems don’t stem from coaching. it’s all about their ‘leader’ Dirk. He’s just too soft and not a leader(as Wade put it). Everyone was beating up on Isiah for not trying to go after some european player, but there hasn’t been a single team that’s been led by a Euro import that’s won it all. Dallas needs to trade Dirk while he’s still got some value for a player or two that has the heart to win it all.

As I’d said in the other string regarding D’Antoni, I’d hope that Johnson gets consideration as well. He’s a better fit for this roster as it’s currently constituted.

Thibodeau might be the next JVG for all we know. Hell, so might Mark Jackson, and as I’ve stated here previously I really like the idea of brining in someone with a history with the NYK and bringing pride back into MSG. But both Jackson and D’Antoni have excellent track records as coaches. Neither has gotten their teams over the hump in the postseason. But both guided their franchises to new heights.

Johnson is a winner and a gamer. I’m especially impressed with him after hearing his college coach speak about him the the “Black Magic” documentary that recently ran on ESPN. He’d be a great coach for this team.

  19. Not Hawthorne Wingo

Fridayjones, the reason I’m less convinced on Jackson as the next JVG is due to his choice to be an analyst rather than asst. coach. The extraordinary workers are the ones who choose to be around the game no matter what, even if its not in a “starring role”. I know, I just described Herb Williams and maybe he would outwork the other coaches but geez, how could you not be affected by that atmosphere after all those years. I hope Herb either moves up or gets another gig in another organization, I suspect it would be healthier for him. Having said that, Johnson is, as you say, a winner and as I stated above, I’m okay with Johnson as well.

I really want a knick team that had the attitude of Xman, Starks, Oak… back. Despite Jackson’s link to that team, I never thought he was the emotional heart of those teams. Of course, that assumes I can’t have the Knicks of Bradley, Frazier, Monroe, Lucas et. al. Both harder working and smarter than the other teams. Imagine that.
