Ewing Jr. lands in New York

August
29

In a deal that has a fair amount of sentimental value, the Knicks just landed Patrick Ewing Jr. in a swap with the Houston Rockets.

Won’t his dad be jealous.

Ewing Jr. was drafted in the second round by the Sacramento Kings and was then sent to Houston in the Ron Artest trade. He’s a 6-foot-8 forward who earned Big East Sixth-Man-of-the-Year honors last season, averaging 6.1 points and 4.2 rebounds a game at Georgetown. He is an intangible asset to any team.

Here’s a good father-and-son piece from earlier in the summer.

The 24-year-old was here during the glory days. I remember him coming to practice at SUNY Purchase and going one-on-one with Marcus Camby, which makes me feel a little older. He really seemed to enjoy the court time. And from what I’ve seen over the years, still does. I don’t know whether Ewing Jr. is guaranteed a roster spot, but the Knicks could use somebody like that on the end of the bench.

“Coming to the Knicks, and hopefully being able to contribute, means a lot to me,” he said in a statement. “It has always been my dream to play for this team. My goal is to show the coaches that I can play and do all that I can to help the team win some games.”

Do you suppose dad will let the little big man wear No. 33?

I know Donnie Walsh thought highly enough of Ewing Jr. to fish around for a second-round pick, so maybe there is a place for him in New York. This also might be an opportunity to finally used the NBA Developmental League. It’s a great place for a very athletic big man to develop a consistent jump shot.

And the cost? Can you believe the draft rights to Frederic Weis? In other words, the Knicks owe Houston a favor.

“Patrick Ewing will have an opportunity here to compete for a spot on our roster,” Walsh said in a statement. “He is a solid defensive player and a very good athlete.”

We still had the rights to Frederic Weiss? It would be amazing if Ewing Jr. turned into a productive player but I don’t think the Rockets would have just given him to us if there was much of a chance of that. It would be really funny Scott Layden was validated for picking up the French pivot man after all these years.

Does Frederic even show up to Rockets camp? I’d love to see that!!

As a PR move this is fine but it’s not on the level of Farvre to the Jets. The Knicks need a Farvre not Walter McCardy.

    Mike,
You gotta clean up some of that stuff on the Marbury thread. It’s amazing how people still love that guy. I bet he’s making plans to play in Europe as soon as this year. It’s a perfect move for him at this point and he probably could get a deal over there to help him make the payments on his plane and tip the preacher too, though fuel prices will cut into the bottom line, no doubt. He has the chance to dominate that competition.

Ewing Jr. is a Knick? Playoffs baby!!! It’s in the bag!!!

    Frederic Weis is still alive?

Sigh. Does anyone recall a time when we extracted joy from being fans of this team? I just want the season to start and have D’Antoni start installing his system. It can only get better. At least one can hope.

As a side note, the Knicks are my team, in good times and bad, today and forever. I’m here in Boston this week, and I tell you, I’m seeing Celtics gear all over the place for the first time in years. Knick fans are Knick fans through it all, not just when they win a championship.

Hell, if that were the case there’d be no Knick fans left by now.

Though I’m not super optimistic about Little Patrick’s impact on this year’s team, I can’t help but like this move. It could prove helpful for Gallinari because Ewing is a crazy athletic, high energy defender who will challenge Danilo in practice. And I’m sure it will be nice to have another rookie around, especially one so well-versed in the team’s most recent success. My fellow Big East basketball fans know that Little Patrick likes to run. Could see some Top 10 plays from Duhon or Nate and him on the fast break. And I’m not going to lie. It would be so fun to cheer for a Ewing again.

The addition puts the roster to 17. Barring any additional trades, who won’t be on the team?

    Ewing…from the baseline…YES!

Just to clear up who gets credit for Weis, it’s Ed Tapscott, who was running the show after Grunfeld and before Layden.

Thanks for that. Was Tapscott the master mind of Ewing for Rice?

    dan,

Checketts gave the order to move Ewing instead of letting the contract expire, Layden did the deal.

    This move is purely symbolic.

The Knicks have been devastingly awful since drafting Weis and even if Ewing Jr doesn’t make the squad – getting rid of Weis should help lift the storm clouds a little.

That’s what I am hoping for anyway.
