Curry needs to pace himself

I’m sure Eddy Curry will look pretty good on Media Day.
He’s always in shape and ready to go when the Knicks recovene to discuss the upcoming season. The jersey hangs a little loose. And we always check to see how much weight the middleman dropped in the offseason.
Somebody needs to buy the man a cheeseburger.
Order up some room service, go heavy on the carbs. The last thing Donnie Walsh needs to deal with is a breakhout season. Seriously. I know the point can be argued, but Curry still has a lot of potential. He’s also got an opt out clause.
Think about it.
Curry might respond very well to Mike D’Antoni this season. The personalities match up well. He could eventually adapt to playing a new style and provide a true inside presence when the offense slows down.
What happens if he puts up 18 points and eight rebounds a game?
The phone will start ringing and Curry would have to consider hitting the open market in search of a raise. He’s down to earn $10.5 million in 2009-10, and Walsh really can’t afford to be writing big extensions
A bad season makes Curry untradeable.
So when the Knicks sit him down to discuss how things are going to play out, Curry needs to know it would really help the club if he doesn’t suddenly begin to collect All-Star votes.

This may be the dumbest thing I have ever read.
Matt is right in a way. Curry when healthy in 2007 was a major force who led the whole nba in points in the paint. Curry was injured all last season first with a torn shoulder and then with a bad knee. I think Curry will be a 18-8 guy next season and shoot 58%
Let me be clear. What is dumb about the article is that the writer implies the Knicks are better off with Curry playing poorly this year rather than the possibility of losing a great player via free agency. The Knicks are much better off with an all star season out of Curry, which I believe he is capable, than having him play like last year. These are the tough decisions Walsh would prefer to make compared to the one’s he must make now. Trust me.
LoL, I know you must be kidding. Think about it. Curry, Crawford and Zbo each have break out seasons. All three opt out (or in ZBo’s case we trade him for expiring contracts). In 2010 the Knicks sign Bosh and Lebron to fit with a rising Chandler, a resigned DLee and hell, me or just about any one else at the point. Damn, you’re right that would really suck.
i do not understand this post.
we want 110% from all our players at all times.
anything less is isiah thomas.
He was kidding about Curry not playing well. I think you guys are taking him a bit too literally.
I’m confused. Mike, what do you mean here?
I expect more of the same from this team. The Yankees can go out and get CC Sabathia. The Knicks can’t. They got Duhon and Gallinari (who has a bad back, ugh!).
There would have to be some major statistical anomolies for this team to get appreciably better this year. Every year since Isiah started we’ve bee singing the praises of our guys potential. This year I just can’t even be optimistic. The best thing you can say about this franchise right now is that they resisted the temptation to bring in another big salary “savior” and that fiscal prudence might pay dividends down the line. Wow yea, fiscal prudence!
If Curry plays well, he can opt out of his deal and get a bigger deal elsewhere. I rather have that than having him pick up his option.
Geez, maybe I’ve lost my touch. I was just pointing out a reality in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Sam wins the prize. I’m not really suggesting we fatten up Curry so he can’t play well this season. But keep up the debate, I like the effort so far.
Eddie Curry gives me schizophrenia. There are two voices screaming at each other in my head right now.
Voice # 1: The debate is also pointless because Eddie Curry is Eddie Curry. The guy has been in the league since 2001. What makes anyone think that after 7 years in the league he’s going to
a) finally stay in shape for an entire season
b) get what it takes to be great defensive center
c) put a higher energy level from A, together with B, combined with a DESIRE to want to be a great defender together
d) understand that it’s insane for someone 6-11 and 285 to have a career average of 5.4 rebounds a game.
Maybe this is the year Darius Miles finally puts it all together too.
Voice # 2
In his first two season in NY, Curry’s PPG went up from 13.6 to 19.5. Even more encouraging his rebounds went up from 6.1 to a whopping 7.0 a game. That would have been 12th among NBA centers last year.
If you put together the best #s of Curry’s career and put them together in a year it looks like this
19.5 pts on 58.5 % shooting
7.1 reb
1.1 blocks
Not too shabby huh?
The guy entered the league out of HS and was always on bad teams. Now he’s got older, has a great coach, and he’s….still on a bad team. But things are looking up!
Voice 1:
Then you realize
7.1 rebounds over 35 minutes. using rebounds per 48 minutes. ( I don’t know why ESPN does it by 48 minutes instead of 40 but that’s the only sortable stat I could find)
Curry’s REB/48 = 9.73 in the BEST year of his career so far.
That would make him 70th in the league.
Jared Dudley is a 6-7 small forward who’s been in the league 1 year and gets 9.9 per 48.
I hope Eddie proves my pessimistic side wrong. By a lot.
I’d rather some other team pay him TEN MILLION a season.
Eddie Curry and Manu Ginobili get paid the same salary.
We can use the money to keep David Lee or sign someone in the summer of Bron/Wade, etc.
Eddie is Eddie and that is it. He will be Eddie-a disappointment. The question really is will he be a mild disappointment of a major disappointment. IMHO, he opts out either way. He does not want to be here. In fact, he does not want to play B-ball for a living. If they had professional tumblers, Eddie would be one of them. Perhaps he will run away at the end of the season and join a circus.
At least one error/typo per blog. And it seems Dougherty doesn’t even take it seriously. More concerned seeming glib than having substance. This sort of stuff is apropos of a high school newspaper.
