It’s obviously very early in the Knicks-Celtics series, but the conventional wisdom has been that unless New York completely implodes in the playoffs — getting swept while playing listlessly — Mike D’Antoni’s job as coach will be safe for next season.
Well, not to quote Dubya (unless you’re watching this brilliant highlight clip), but I’d say Mission Accomplished.
Even with a hobbled Chancey Billups’s status uncertain for Game 2 in Boston on Tuesday night, it would seem unfathomable that the Knicks would fail to compete going forward, especially when the series shifts back to New York.
As an aside, in what was the best moment of his post-game press conference, D’Antoni’s incredulous reply to the sometimes abrasive Stephen A. Smith’s question about Knick defense was awesome. Way to go, Mike.

I don’t know what you’re smoking, but Dantoni did the exact opposite to me. He is supposed to be an offensive genius and Doc Rivers coached rings around him. And he looked like a little kid trying to go at Stephen A. I say if Walsh isn’t renewed, MD is out the door, too. If he does come back, he won’t last the season. His “system” is all smoke and mirrors—just like he is.
