The news that Marcus Camby will return for Christmas should fill Knicks fans with holiday joy. This is true for me, and I celebrate Chanukah.
The Knicks this season are 28th in the league in rebound rate, as per John Hollinger’s stats. This is a team-wide problem, with only Tyson Chandler, the currently-injured Rasheed Wallace, and the rather limited Kurt Thomas managing to crack the league’s top 100 in the stat.
Last season’s rebound rate leader in the NBA? Marcus Camby, checking in just ahead of Dwight Howard and rebound machine Reggie Evans.
The Knicks are going to shoot better from the perimeter than they have so far. And Camby should improve the second team defense as surely as Amar’e Stoudemire is a good bet to revolutionize the second team offense.
But the Knicks, for all their success, have been getting killed all year on the boards, putting greater pressure on the defense and raising the cost of every missed shot. That’s about to change, if healthy Marcus Camby has returned.
Seriously, this is a great present. Don’t go returning it.
