A future second round pick!
Okay, look: this wasn’t the move that some were hoping would come along and make the Knicks better. Frankly, after last night, had this deal netted Kevin Durant, it probably wouldn’t feel like enough.
But the deal does a few things: it opens a roster spot, with players like Jermaine O’Neal (a likely buyout candidate) and free agent Donte Greene available.
And it suggests that the Knicks are prepared to sink or swim with Iman Shumpert, since the only other perimeter defender they have is… James White? And he isn’t. Really, it is Shumpert or bust against quick guards.
Rooting for Shumpert to recover isn’t the worst idea for the Knicks, nor the hardest thing to get excited about for the fans.
So no J.J. Redick. But no panic, either. We’ll see if the Knicks were right. After all, panic gets a bad rap. But no one praised the Titanic captain, post-iceberg, for is “Unusually calm demeanor.”
Separating panic from bold action has to do with results. The Knicks have 31 games, plus playoff run TBD, to show what this inaction was.
