I got the feeling we were saying goodbye to Kurt Thomas last night against Utah. I don’t mean immediately, but I wondered if that extended time, 26+ minutes with some jumpers, some big rebounds, physical defense, strong picks… you know, Kurt Thomas, would happen again in his career.
Looks like that might be it for Kurt. Frank Isola is reporting that Thomas has a stress reaction/fracture in his foot. Can he keep playing through it? Should he? Hard to say the answer is anything but no. Then again, it is Thomas, so anything is possible.
The good news, at least, is with Kenyon Martin and Marcus Camby around, the Knicks have some cover for Tyson Chandler. The bad news is, Chandler is getting an MRI on his neck, and has missed the past three games with a knee injury as well (or both? Or neither? One never quite knows with the Knicks and injuries).
Still, last night was a particularly Kurt Thomas way to go out, if that was it for him. Let’s hope it wasn’t.
UPDATE! Knicks say Thomas will miss 2-4 weeks. Chandler will miss a week.
Again: these are Knicks estimates. So plan accordingly.
